Towing 101: Matching Trailer Towing Weight to Your Vehicle

Before I bought my current trailer, I made a mistake a lot of first-time RVers make. I fell in love with a floor plan before I checked whether my truck could actually handle it. A dealer walked me through the numbers. My dream trailer sat several hundred pounds past what my vehicle could safely tow. That conversation changed how I shop for gear, and it’s the reason I’m writing this post.

Why Matching Trailer Weight to Your Vehicle Actually Matters

Trailer towing weight in Canada isn’t just a spec sheet detail. It’s the difference between a stable, controllable rig and one that sways dangerously at highway speed. I learned this by nearly making the wrong purchase, not by living through a scary moment on the road. I’d rather you learn it the same way.

Most people, myself included at first, look at a truck’s advertised towing capacity and assume that number tells the whole story. It doesn’t. Towing capacity is a best-case number. Payload actually limits you day to day.

Payload Is the Number That Actually Matters

Every vehicle carries a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, or GVWR. This number sets the maximum total weight of the truck itself, plus everyone and everything inside it, including the tongue weight pressing down from the trailer. A simple formula gives you payload capacity: GVWR minus curb weight, the weight of your empty truck. Say your truck has a GVWR of 9,000 pounds and weighs 6,000 pounds empty. Your payload comes to 3,000 pounds.

That 3,000 pounds has to cover passengers, cargo in the bed, and the trailer’s tongue weight all at once. A trailer that seems perfectly within your truck’s tow rating can still overload your payload once you add gear and family.

The Trailer I Almost Bought

The trailer that caught my eye had a dry weight close to my truck’s advertised max tow rating. Technically towable, on paper. Once I factored in water tanks, propane, gear, and passengers, I would have blown past payload before I even left the driveway.

The dealer walked me through the math. For the first time, I really understood the difference between what a truck can pull and what it can safely carry. I chose a lighter trailer instead, one with enough margin that I wasn’t constantly pushing my truck’s limits. That margin has made every trip since noticeably more relaxed.

Tongue Weight: The Number Most People Skip

Tongue weight measures the downward pressure your trailer’s hitch exerts on your truck. It should sit between 10 and 15 percent of your trailer’s total loaded weight. Too little, and the trailer’s center of gravity shifts too far back, a common cause of dangerous sway. Too much, and it overloads your truck’s rear axle.

Take a 7,000-pound loaded trailer as an example. Somewhere between 700 and 1,050 pounds should press down on your hitch. You can’t eyeball this number. Weight-Carrying vs. Weight-Distribution Hitches

A standard weight-carrying hitch handles lighter trailers just fine. Heavier loads benefit enormously from a weight-distribution hitch instead. These use spring bars to shift some of the tongue weight forward, off your truck’s rear axle and onto the front axle and the trailer’s own axles. The result: a more level rig, better steering response, and brakes that actually work the way they’re supposed to.

The Connection Checklist I Follow Every Time

I run through the same sequence every single time I hitch up now, in the same order, no shortcuts:

  • Ball size matches the trailer coupler exactly, and the coupler sits fully latched and locked over the ball
  • Safety chains cross underneath the hitch, forming a cradle in case the coupler fails
  • Breakaway cable attaches separately from the safety chains, not looped through them
  • Trailer lights and brakes get tested before pulling away, not after
  • Tires hold the pressure rated for a loaded trailer, not the relaxed unloaded number

Why the Breakaway System Isn’t Optional

A breakaway system triggers the trailer’s brakes automatically if your trailer disconnects unexpectedly. Canadian law requires a brake controller once a trailer crosses a certain weight, and the exact threshold varies by province. Ontario sets that line at 1,360 kilograms, Alberta at 910 kilograms, British Columbia at 1,400 kilograms, and Quebec at 1,300 kilograms. Where you put weight inside the trailer matters almost as much as how much weight you’re carrying. Heavy items belong low and centered over the axles. Loading heavy gear too far toward the rear creates the exact sway problem a properly set tongue weight is supposed to prevent.

A Simple Way to Check Your Setup

Before I owned a tongue weight scale, I used a low-tech version of the headlight test. Park the unloaded truck facing a wall and mark where the headlights hit. Hitch up the loaded trailer and check again. If the beams jump noticeably higher, the front end has lifted. That usually means the rear suspension carries too much load, and steering or braking response has already suffered.

Tire Pressure Changes When You’re Towing

This detail surprised me the first time a dealer mentioned it. The tire pressure listed on your door sticker suits an empty, unloaded vehicle. Add the weight of a loaded trailer’s tongue weight, and that same pressure lets the sidewalls flex more than they should. This flexing builds heat and raises blowout risk. When towing, bump rear tires up to the maximum pressure listed on the tire’s sidewall, not the door sticker number. It’s a five-minute check before a trip that makes a real difference.

Putting It All Together Before Your Next Trip

If I could hand my past self one piece of advice before that first almost-purchase, it would be this: check payload before you fall in love with a floor plan. The towing capacity on a brochure grabs your attention, but payload, tongue weight, and proper hitching actually keep you safe on the road.

None of this requires special expertise. It requires slowing down, doing the math with your actual numbers instead of the manufacturer’s best-case scenario, and running through the same hitching checklist every single time, even after you’ve done it a hundred times before.
